A Patola saree is a double ikat woven silk saree traditionally crafted in Patan, Gujarat, India. The defining characteristic is the resist-dyeing of both warp and weft threads before weaving, producing perfectly symmetrical, vibrant geometric patterns on both sides of the fabric. Patan Patola holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, making it one of India's most protected textile heritage crafts. A single saree can take anywhere from 6 months to 4 years to weave.
Patan Patola uses the double ikat technique — where both the warp and weft threads are resist-dyed before weaving — making it reversible and extremely rare. Only a handful of Salvi weaver families in Patan still practise this 900-year-old craft. Rajkot Patola uses the single ikat technique, where only the warp threads are dyed. This makes Rajkot Patola more accessible in price while retaining the vivid geometric patterns and pure silk quality characteristic of Patola weaving.
Authentic Patan Patola sarees (double ikat) range from ₹50,000 to over ₹5,00,000 depending on the complexity of the pattern, silk quality, and weaving duration. Rajkot Patola (single ikat) sarees are priced between ₹8,000 and ₹80,000.
